Wet Rot Treatment in Dundee
Soft, damp, decaying timber usually means wet rot. We treat it and, just as importantly, fix the leak or damp that caused it.
Found timber that is soft, dark and crumbling where it has been getting wet? That is usually wet rot. We provide wet rot treatment in Dundee and the surrounding areas, treating the affected timber and, just as importantly, fixing the damp or leak that caused it, so the problem does not simply return.
What is wet rot?
Wet rot is decay caused by a fungus that thrives in timber with a high moisture content, often from a leak, an overflowing gutter or persistent damp. Unlike dry rot, it generally stays in the wet timber rather than spreading into dry wood nearby, which makes it more contained, but it still weakens the wood and needs dealing with properly.
Signs of wet rot
- Timber that is soft and spongy, and dark or discoloured
- Wood that crumbles or flakes, and cracks along the grain
- A damp, musty smell
- Paint that is lifting, with soft timber beneath a sound-looking surface
- Visible damp nearby, such as under windows, near gutters or in the loft
Wet rot or dry rot?
Both come from damp. Wet rot stays in the wet timber and feels soft and spongy. Dry rot can spread further through timber and masonry and needs more thorough treatment. A survey confirms which you have, so you only treat what is actually there.
How we treat wet rot
We survey the affected area to find both the extent of the decay and the source of the moisture. We then remove and replace badly decayed timber, treat the surrounding wood, and put right the cause. Where that cause is your roof or guttering, we can carry out the roof repair at the same time.
Fix the cause, not just the rot
Treating rotten timber without fixing the damp behind it only delays the problem. As a combined roofing and timber team, we deal with both, so the rot does not come back once the wood is sorted.
