Roofing & timber preservation FAQs
Straight answers to the questions Dundee homeowners ask us most, on roofing and timber preservation. If your question is not here, just get in touch.
Roofing
How much does a new roof cost in Dundee?
The cost of a new roof depends on the size and pitch of your roof, the materials you choose and how much of the existing structure needs replacing. Rather than quote a misleading figure, we carry out a free survey and give you a clear, itemised price before any work begins.
Do I need a roof survey before buying a house?
A roof survey is well worth it before you buy. Our written condition report and photos tell you whether the roof is sound or needs work, so you can budget or negotiate with confidence. Our survey call-out fee is refundable against any repairs we carry out.
Are drone roof surveys worth it?
Yes, especially for steep or hard to reach roofs. A drone inspection reaches every part of the roof safely, without scaffolding, and gives you clear aerial photos of any problem. The report fee is refundable against any repairs you go on to book with us.
How often should gutters be cleaned?
As a general rule, clear your gutters at least once a year, and twice a year if you have trees nearby. Blocked gutters overflow and push water into walls and timber, which leads to damp and rot, so regular clearing is a cheap way to protect your home.
How do I know if my flat roof needs replacing?
Tell-tale signs are pooling water, splits or blisters, water stains inside, and a covering that has gone brittle or is lifting at the edges. Small problems can often be repaired, but a roof that fails repeatedly is usually cheaper to replace. We give an honest repair or replace recommendation.
Do you offer emergency call-outs?
Yes. If you have storm damage or a sudden leak, get in touch and we will make your roof safe as quickly as we can. We will be honest about timing rather than promise a response we cannot keep, and we treat genuine emergencies as a priority.
Timber preservation
What are the signs of woodworm?
Common signs of woodworm are small round exit holes in timber, fine powdery dust called frass beneath them, tunnels in the wood and, in active cases, the beetles themselves. Roof timbers and floorboards are typical places to find it. If you spot these signs, arrange a timber survey.
What is the difference between dry rot and wet rot?
Both are caused by damp, but they differ. Wet rot stays where the timber is wet and makes it soft, dark and spongy. Dry rot can spread further through masonry and timber, with reddish dust and fine strands, and needs more thorough treatment. A survey confirms which you have.
Is moss damaging my roof?
Moss is not just untidy. It holds water against tiles and slates, blocks gutters and can lift the edges of coverings over time, which speeds up wear and can lead to leaks. Removing and treating it, and keeping gutters clear, helps your roof last longer.
How do I stop condensation and mould at home?
Condensation comes from warm, moist air meeting cold surfaces, so the lasting fixes are better ventilation, heating and airflow rather than simply wiping mould away. We diagnose the cause and recommend practical steps so the damp and mould do not keep coming back.
