Dry Rot Treatment in Dundee

Dry rot is treatable when it is caught and dealt with properly. We diagnose it, treat it and fix the damp that caused it.

Dry rot is the one that worries people, but the right response is calm and methodical, not panic. We provide dry rot treatment in Dundee and the surrounding areas, from survey and diagnosis through to treatment and repair. Caught and dealt with properly, dry rot is treatable, and because we also fix roofs and damp, we deal with the cause as well as the decay.

What is dry rot?

Dry rot is a wood-destroying fungus that takes hold in damp timber and can then travel across and through masonry to reach other timber, even drier wood nearby. That ability to spread is what makes it more serious than wet rot, and why it is worth acting on quickly.

Signs of dry rot

  • Timber that is dry and cracked, and crumbles into cube-like pieces
  • Fine reddish-brown dust on or around the affected area
  • Greyish strands or a soft, cotton-wool-like growth
  • A damp, musty smell
  • Skirtings, joists or floorboards that look shrunken or distorted

Dry rot or wet rot?

Both come from damp, but they behave differently. Wet rot stays in the wet timber and makes it soft and spongy. Dry rot can spread further and needs more thorough treatment. A survey confirms which you have, so the treatment is right first time.

How we treat dry rot

We start with a survey to confirm the extent of the rot and, just as importantly, the source of the moisture feeding it. Treatment then involves removing affected timber, treating the surrounding area and putting right the damp behind it. Where that source is your roof, we can carry out the roof repair at the same time.

Deal with the cause, not just the rot

Treating rot without fixing the leak or damp behind it only delays the problem. As a combined roofing and timber team, we put both right, so the rot does not return once the timber is treated.
